Retrofantasma Review
Creepers (AKA Phenomena) - If you think you're about to watch a movie about a young girl (Jennifer Connelly) who has a mysterious ability to control insects, you're only partially right. (If you think spiders are insects, you're a little more right, though.) Creepers is all over the syuzhet map. For a good portion of the film, Jennifer's bug abilities disappear completely. Inspector Geiger (Patrick Bauchau) is noticeably absent for the middle stretch as well. On the up side, the Giorgio Armani costumes are a marvel all their own. Add that to the series of false endings (one involves a monkey) and you've got yourself some entertainment.
Demons - For all you aspiring monster movie-makers out there, once the first demon shows its face, the audience expects the ball to start rolling, so don't drag it out. And while a long and implausible motorcycle-in-the-theater scene might seem like a good idea, trust me, it's not. Mr. Argento, what were you thinking? Why did the helicopter fall from the ceiling? Why was it covered in dust? Heck, why did the demons emit bright green fluids from their mouths?
I guess it's possible that these questions are sufficiently answered in Demons 2, but something (Nostradamus, perhaps?) tells me I shouldn't get my hopes up.

Coloring....Se7en
After Image & Sound last night I was thinking about coloring stuff and thought of a really good thing to check out, if you want to learn more about what is possible. On the criterion edition of Se7en there is a bonus feature about how they got that bleach-bypass, super saturated look. They actually sit in with the colorist and he shows what he did to the original footage for the big climatic ending. It's pretty amazing. The original footage looked so flat and dated and then after just a few minutes of tweaking it, it looks freaking amazing. Anyway, it's worth checking out. Kapes

Day Night Day Night Trailer
I remember reading a review for the movie, Day Night Day Night, in the New York Times some time ago. It is about a female suicide bomber, slice of life, hyper-realist style. (YAY Bazin). I just wondered if anybody had seen it, and if not here is the tailer to intrigue you.

Two-Lane Blacktop
On a whim, I checked out Two-Lane Blacktop from the county library yesterday. The synopsis on the back says that it's "possibly the greatest road movie ever made." Even with that glowing recommendation, I was hesitant when I saw that the main characters were played by James Taylor (yes, that James Taylor) and Dennis Wilson (yes, of the Beach Boys).
Boy was I wrong. This movie is fantastic. It's like Easy Rider except with cars and without all the hippies. Taylor is pretty awful as The Driver, but it doesn't really detract from your viewing experience. It's about the road, man.

BCN in da House!
I went ahead and put together this blog for our class. It is pretty self sustaining and as long as everyone is able to use it and gets something out of it I think it will be a good thing for all. It is real easy to add links, pictures, movies or whatever to your post so hopefully it'll be a good way to exchange information. Below is an example of imbedding a youtube video. Basically if you find something cool you can just go to the detail tab and cut and paste the code that it has in the embed field.
